Things They Said

Choreographer and dancer Shermaine Heng returned to Ballarat recently to work with young women of mixed cultural heritage. Together they created a piece of work that told their stories.

What a magical way for young women to explore their experiences and share them with others, to bond with each other and collaborate as well as stand alone with confidence in who they are.

Shermaine Heng knows how to gently guide others to express their truth and to venture into perhaps untold arenas of story – and to coax the best from her dancers (whether or not they have danced before). I can speak from experience, that her way of choreographing is so nurturing yet strong and demanding at the same time.

I was excited to be asked to take some photos of this piece.

Here is a glimse into the beautiful work that Shermaine and her young dancers created together, in Ballarat.

The piece is titled, Things They Said.
